Celebrities pushed the boat out at this year’s Met Gala 2016, with futuristic gowns, tying into the Manus x Machina theme!
The Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit is an annual black-tie event, co-hosted by Vogue editor Anna Wintour and is an extravaganza held on the first Monday in May tor raise money for the fashion department of the institute. Surprisingly, the curatorial department is the only one in the museum that must fund itself. The Met Gala calls upon the world’s most glamorous stars to the red carpet and is often dubbed the ‘party of the year’ and the ‘Oscars of the East Coast’.
This year’s theme was Manux x Machina: Fashion in an age of Technology and the honoree chairs of the gala are Karl Lagerfeld; Chanel’s creative director, Miuccia Prada and Louis Vuitton’s artistic director Nicolas Ghesquiere. And if you think this is an ordinary charitable event – you’re wrong. Tickets this year went for $30,000 apiece and tables were $275,000. The party and the exhibit are sponsored by Apple and the money raised from sales goes entirely to the institute. In 2015, more than $12.5million was raised and almost 600 people attend every year.
So with the Met Gala done and dusted for another year, what did the world’s most important people wear to the exclusive event? A theme isn’t a necessity but it is encouraged and celebrities tend to be invited by a particular brand and are therefore expected to wear something from their collection. With technology a must-have accessory to this year’s gala, guests sported a lot of Prada, Burberry, Marchesa and Chanel and metallic was the forefront of this year’s futuristic theme!
Following on from last year’s theme, China: Through the Looking Glass, the Met Gala saw a dazzling and bizarre mix of dresses.
