Sunday 20 September played host to the 67th Emmy Awards 2015 as the best of the small screen was honoured at one of the most prestigious television awards in America.
Now normally, I would dive into the best dressed stars from the night, but this year takes a twist like no other.
So we all know HBO’s Game of Thrones is the most talked after show, with millions of us tuning in to watch every episode aired! The Emmys was no different and it also became the most talked after show of the night after becoming the first series with the most awards won in a single year to take home for the first time in the show’s six season history, the best drama series award. Beating nine other competitors including Mad Men, Game of Thrones was a true winner of the night! Game of Thrones managed to win 12 awards out of an impressive 24 nominations. The epic drama took home Emmys for best directing and best writing as well as Peter Dinklage who previously won an Emmy for his role as Tyrion Lannister, won for best supporting actor. HBO walked home with an astonishing and well-earned 43 Emmys.
With Game of Thrones the biggest winner of the night, it cannot be overlooked that the Emmys was a significant turning point for women. Viola Davis made history as the first African American woman of colour to take home the award for leading actress in a drama for her role in How to Get Away with Murder. It was a phenomenal moment which has captivated the famous and the ordinary. In a moving speech, Viola quoted the civil rights activist Harriet Tubman and said ‘The only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity.’ When accepting her Emmy, Viola said ‘You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there.’ ‘So here’s to all the writers…People who have redefined what it is to be beautiful, to be sexy, to be a leading woman – to be black.’
Take a look at some of the biggest moments of the night, including my favourite red carpet sartorial moments.
